Man I was lucky to be born in the USA. I don't know if I'd make it as one of those guys that have to beg at the topes(speedbumps) in the middle of the highway for spare pesos in the shanty towns of Mexico. You see some heart braking stuff on the roads from the paradise that is San Pancho to the border town of Nogales. I saw more dead dogs and cats then any other trip. I also saw more deformed/challenged kids on the side of the street begging for money then I have any other trip. It makes you appreciate all we have being born in a place where you have every opportunity to succeed and if you don't there are a million other ways to get taken care of rather then being tossed in the gutter.
I don't know what it is about New Years Day but there is no one on the road in Mexico. We did the drive from San Pancho to Mazatlan in 4 hours and it usually takes between 5:30 and 6. Then we rolled through Mazatlan in about 8 minutes and it usually takes at least 1/2 hour. The whole way we rolled at about 90 mph and we had hoped to just make it to San Carlos by 6pm but were 4 hours farther along and almost made it to the border by then.
It is awesome to go on vacation down south but it is such a relief to cross that Fronteria back into the US. Usually I'm done driving for a few months once I reach Tucson but we'll be back in Durango on Sunday night to get ready for this SA trip. Then I'll once again be driving back down to Tucson for the remainder of the winter. I gotta figure out a job once I'm done racing that allows me to spend spring, summer and fall in Durango but winter in Tucson.
I have a big day tomorrow so I gotta get some rest. I have to check out the new digs for this year, bust out a run with "racer Meg", spin a lap out at Fantasy Island and maybe play some golf. I'm hoping to fit in a bit of Indian food along the way as well.
I wonder how cold I'm going to be on Sunday night......
