The first WC of 2010 is in the books. Dalby Forest in the UK hosted it's first ever XC WC this weekend and it was a great success.
I wasn't sure if I would be able to race because my knee has been really messed up since Guatemala, then traveling from Sea Otter over here. On Wednesday I could barely do 1 lap of the course. This week I hit the therapy hard though, massage, RICE, physio and hot/cold and today i was able to race just about pain free. I was still very worried about crashing and couldn't jump back on the bike but it was 100% then a few days ago.
The course here at Dalby was fast from the gun and I was really worried about the first turn but made it through both with out incident. I did lose about 10 places at the start but no skin which was the main goal. I managed to get a cut on my leg when a guy in front of me flipped over trying to ride a technical climb that everyone else was running. I also had a quick pit stop to tighten my seat in the tech zone but only lost about 10 seconds, more of a blow to the moral.
The last 2 laps I was riding with Roel and couldn't seem to close to anyone else. I was glad to finish just ahead of him since I always die at the end and we have the big climb at the end.
The Dart killed it today finishing third and being the protagonist in the front group of 3 the whole race. If he didn't make a few mistakes on the last lap he might have won.
I didn't have my best race but was glad I was able to suffer pretty well and stay focused even though I was riding a ways back. The World Cup is so competitive nowadays that there are 5 to 10 people every minute. If you're off by 1 or 2 % on a given day the places add up quick.
Tomorrow we're off to Houffalize(by air) and should be at the Hotel du Commerce in time for a quick ride and some dinner.
Oh, I almost forgot, HUGE CONGRATS to Willow for getting 2nd today and riding awesome. Also all the Luna Chics and Heather. Over half the top 10 were from North America, awesome!
I wonder what Winston and Meg are doing right now......
